An 8 Week Journey into Mindfulness
Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is an 8 week course that teaches a form of
meditation called mindfulness, which is the ability to skillfully direct your attention to the
present moment. MBSR was developed by Jon Kabat-Zinn at the University of Massachusetts
Medical School in 1979 and is empirically supported with over three decades of research.
Research shows MBSR improves emotional well-being, cognitive functioning, and physical
health.
Mindfulness is a basic human quality accessible to all through practice. This course offers you a
greater sense of connection to your life, both inwardly and outwardly. It offers a systematic
method to better manage the stressors in your life and tools to access one’s inner resources
for coping, growing, and healing. Participants will explore the interplay of the mind and body.
Course Structure:
The MBSR course consists of 8 consecutive weekly 2 ½ hour sessions
and a one day meditation retreat at the studio.
The course includes:
~Guided instruction in mindfulness meditation practices
~Guided mindful movement through gentle stretching and yoga
~Inquiry exercises to enhance awareness
~Daily home practices to generalize skills
~Guided audio files for home practice
~Workbook
Research:
~Increases in one’s ability to cope with short-term and long-term stress
~Decreased activation in area of the brain that triggers fight or flight (i.e. decreased anxiety)
~Reductions in perception of pain and the ability to cope with chronic pain
~Improvements in one’s ability to relax and feelings of enhanced self-esteem
~Greater levels of energy and zest for life
~Increases in focus and attention
~Increases in executive functioning and short-term memory
